Okay, I'm sure the few of you who read my blog are tired of hearing me bitch about a fanfic I think is pretty damn terrible (God knows I am, too), so I'm going to run down a list of games (including a short, one- or two-sentence elevator pitch to the best of my ability) I tried out in the June 2024 Steam Next Fest, hoping that I'll find something to play that's as out-there as Balatro, which featured in the February 2024 event and was in the top 10 of most downloaded demos:

  • Dungeons of Hinterberg - Imagine SSX as a dungeon crawler
  • Tavern Talk - Coffee Talk, but more explicitly magic-themed
  • Fields of Mistria - Yet another farming sim, but with 90's-era anime vibes (specifically Sailor Moon)
  • Dungeon Clawler - A roguelike where you operate a crane machine
  • Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers - Balatro, but poker instead of blackjack
  • Pyrene - A card-based dungeon crawler (the closest comparison I can make is the mobile games Card Crawl and Card Thief)
  • Arranger - A sliding puzzle adventure/RPG
  • Dice & Fold - A solitaire dice RPG
  • Metal Slug Tactics - SNK's famous run-and-gun series as a tactical RPG in the vein of Final Fantasy Tactics or Vandal Hearts
  • The Crush House - A game where you film the contestants of a Big Brother-style reality TV show
  • Tactical Breach Wizards - Wizards with guns. That's it. That's the pitch.
  • Tiny Glade - A calming castle creation toy similar to Townscapers where you can "draw" your castle's walls
If you think you might have fun with any of the titles I just mentioned, these demons will be available until the end of the event on June 17.

While most of us who watched last night's Nintendo Direct were undoubtedly anticipating news on games like Metroid Dread and Bayonetta 3, there are usually one or two "available RIGHT NOW!!" surprise announcements buried in there. One was leaked ahead of time (the Castlevania Advance Collection, a compilation containing Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow, and Dracula X as a bonus), and another came way out of left field (ActRaiser Renaissance, a remake/remaster of the 1990 platformer/civilization builder hybrid where you play what's implied to be the Judeo-Christian God, but is only referred to as "the Master" because Nintendo was very dicey about depictions of anything religious back then). I never got the chance to finish Circle of the Moon (too dark) or Dracula X (too hard), but that's a mistake I intend to correct before I die. That, and I like collecting these offbeat game compilations.

They're also out on PlayStation 4 and PC, if you're interested.
