Unfortunately, I think I caught a cold at work and got a sore throat and the usual stuff that comes with it (headache, coughing, etc.) It's nothing too serious, but it's a pain in the ass when your body doesn't work the way your brain wants it to.

Fortunately, I've willed myself back into writing The Ghost of Ochs chapters regularly, and just released Chapter 45: Supplies in Demand (don't mind the AO3 chapter number; I had three interludes interspersed between them, shifting the numbers). It's part of a Lent ritual I have going for myself where I don't take something "bad" out of my life, but put something "good" in (in this case, it's being creative).

Minor spoilers and errata )

I've had my eye on buying a dedicated gaming computer for a while now, but hadn't seriously thought of actually buying it due to the cost involved (the mid-range all-purpose computers I've bought over the years have ranged somewhere from $500-$800, with the only real upgrades I've added to them were extra RAM sticks when I needed to multitask because they're the easiest things for me to install. On Sunday, my dad drove me out to Micro Center where he got his latest computer (that would theoretically make it easier for him to watch the weekly church service), where I bought myself a PowerSpec G711. I've only had this for a week, so I haven't really had a chance to put it through its paces yet. I'm still trying to get used to the "glowing cooling fans and GPU" aesthetic these gaming PCs have, along with there being no optical disk drive...but I rarely used the one on my old computer anyway.

Aside from the obvious "play better games on my PC", the real reason I chose to upgrade my computer after about 5 1/2 years was for the space it offered. My old rig offered 2 TB for storing games/music/etc., but only 96 GB for programs (and do you believe how weird it is to say 96 GB is too little space?) The G711 only started with 1 TB standard, but I also bought a supplementary 4 TB drive which the clerks installed on-site at no extra cost. Now I won't have to worry as much about shuffling my programs or games around to make room for new ones like I have to do for my PS4 and Xbox One.

Now then, what else have I been doing?

Video Games - While I decide to go with something of a reset for my digital library, I've been playing River City Girls 2 on Nintendo Switch and just recruited Marian (the "damsel in distress" from the original Double Dragon who was a shopkeeper in the first River City Girls game). You have to fight her as a boss first, and it took me six tries to beat her because every time you knock off one of her life bars, she jumps up to hit a switch that floods the room with toxic waste, and you have to jump onto pillars while she tosses exploding oil drums at you. I lost a lot of health because I misjudged how far I needed to jump between pillars. She's also wicked fast and will often dodge out of your combos, which no other enemies up to this point have done yet. Regardless, I can't wait to try her out in real combat. The other new-ish playable character, Provie from River City Ransom: Underground, is still out there somewhere, and I hope to find her soon. ⭐

Manga - I've been on a SPY x FAMILY kick lately, and I just finished reading Volume 5 from my library. While this one wasn't quite as cute as Volume 4 (where Anya first met her new psychic family dog Bond), I did enjoy Chapter 29 and its "Take Your Daughter to Work Day" subplot, with Anya's (failed) attempt to explain to her class what Loid and Yor do for a living. ⭐⭐

Fan Fiction - I don't have much going on in the way of fan fiction (other than slowly working on the latest chapter of The Ghost of Ochs), but one of my friends tipped me off to a silly and cute little Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes one-shot called But I Don't Want to Be a Marketable Plushie, written by the same author who wrote the epic-length Three Houses fic An Eagle Among Lions (which I also like). When I first saw gameplay trailers for Three Hopes and learned that Monica was going to be playable, I was excited, for her dire situation was what inspired me to start writing Ghost. Playing the game and learning that Monica had a thing for Edelgard surprised me at first, but I quickly warmed up to the pairing, and I just wanted to read a story where the emperor and her loyal (and lovestruck) vassal just relax and goof off without the specter of war hanging over them.⭐⭐

There are only six days left until Fire Emblem Engage drops, so I'll soon have something to keep me occupied for a while after playing Three Hopes inside and out for months. I hope this new game resonates with me as much as Three Houses did.

With Scarlet Blaze and Golden Wildfire all wrapped up, it's time for Azure Gleam to go under the microscope. Why am I doing that route last? There are two reasons:
  1. Edelgard and Claude's goals are more closely aligned in this game than in Three Houses, and openly work together in Part II of both their routes.
  2. Azure Gleam has the most faction-exclusive characters out of the three. Most of the Blue Lions save for Ashe and Mercedes are completely loyal to Dimitri and can't be recruited away from him, while the Church of Seiros characters (Seteth, Flayn, and Catherine) are loyal to Rhea and can't be recruited away from her.
Anyway, spoiler time:
While I make my way through the second half of Azure Gleam (which I hope to get done before the official start of autumn), I'm also going back through the old quests of the other two routes to compile a great big spreadsheet/database of everything that happens in those quests - every ally, every enemy, every strategy...but maybe not every bit of dialogue...this solo project is already a time eater for me. I've been at it for a week and I've chronicled most of Scarlet Blaze Chapter 4, so...I have quite a long way to go if I'm going to finish this thing. This should also make filling out Three Hopes content on the Fire Emblem wiki that much easier.

Spoilers for Golden Wildfire Part II )

Now that that's out of the way, I just need to complete a run of Azure Gleam, and I'll have finished all three story routes. There's still more to unlock after that (each route's "bad ending" cutscenes, for one thing), but I'll cross that bridge once I've found the materials to build it.

So, as promised, I powered my way through Scarlet Blaze a second time, but with all of the units I recruited starting out in the mid-40s to do it again on Hard difficulty and fill out the support conversations I didn't get the first time. The "recommended level" curve for the Hard versions of levels is steeper than the ones for Easy and Normal. It looks like for every level increase between maps on Normal, the Hard mode versions go up by two. By the end of the game, the enemy levels top out in the low 100's, and I sure as hell wasn't going to do that much grinding.

Keeping all of my bonuses from New Game+ came with the added benefit of a fully-upgraded base camp, so I can spend more time training and unlocking new skills for my generals. I even stumbled upon "innate abilities", which work almost like Budding Talents from Three Houses where you train a skill outside of the given unit's area of expertise to learn a new spell or ability. The first two I got were "Nullify Magic" for Edelgard (which allows her to no-sell all magic damage after training her as a Gremory), and "Gather" for Monica (which clusters enemies in front of her whenever she starts an attack combo, allowing her to blast them all at once with high-damage area-of-effect spells like Aura and Hades; I got this one by training her as a Trickster). I have a feeling these skills are going to be essential to surviving the game on Maddening difficulty, so I'm teaching as many of these skills as I can to my party members while I have them.

Despite the enemy levels starting to outstrip mine by Chapter 12 or so, I still managed to get through and earn S-ranks by upgrading, "reforging", and "unleashing" my best weapons at the blacksmith, which I'd mostly ignored in favor of finding and using the most powerful weapon drops. Even with levels in the high 60's while the enemy had triple digits, going into battle with +30 forged weapons was enough to close the power gap (though I still got knocked around a lot by the final boss).

After completing my second Scarlet Blaze run, I chose to do Golden Wildfire next because I'd recruited most of their members in SB anyway, meaning I didn't have to focus on leveling them up or grinding for their supports. And you know what that means!
Mo' spoilers, mo' problems )

After playing Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes every day since its release, I managed to finish the Scarlet Blaze storyline on July 4. Fitting, since one of the route's main themes is "independence" - Edelgard bringing back the Southern Church and cutting ties with the Central Church, and flushing "those who slither in the dark" and their allies out of the Empire ASAP instead of waiting until the end of the war to deal with them so that she can conduct her campaign on her own terms instead of theirs.

Now, time for me to spoil the second half of the Scarlet Blaze route!
This story is about to get spoiled like you when you visit your grandmother's house. )

Now to claw my way through Golden Wildfire (and Scarlet Blaze a second time, but on Hard difficulty this time!)

I, like a lot of gamers who preordered Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, got my copy of the game on Thursday but didn't start playing it until Friday morning because I was worried about Nintendo dropping the banhammer on anyone who broke the street date (the truth is that Nintendo's products are fine; it's their overzealous lawyers that lots of people have a justified beef with). Ever since then, I've been pretty much playing the game non-stop because I've had so much fun with it (word of advice: don't do this; those warnings to take a 15-minute for every hour of gameplay aren't just there for show), and I have a crapton of things to say about the first part of Scarlet Blaze (Edelgard's path; I'll do Dimitri's and Claude's in future posts).

I specifically decided to take a brief hiatus from Twitter and other FE spaces to avoid spoilers and other players' reactions (except for an email chain with [personal profile] sarajayechan ) so that my first experience with the full game would go untainted. However, now that the 24-hour grace period is over (and I think I've racked up that much play time in just two days), I'm about to drop a bunch of Scarlet Blaze Part I spoilers.

We can't stop reading here! This is spoiler country. )

The "official" release of Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is just hours away, but lots of people (including myself) have reported receiving their retail copies early. The excitement of jumping into the full game after playing the demo is tempting, but I'm going to exercise restraint and wait until tomorrow morning, along with blocking out any and all Fire Emblem-related social media for at least a week until I make significant progress in the story.

You want to know what I've noticed that doesn't really have anything to do with what's in the game itself? How FE seems to have this "one-two" thing going on with The Legend of Zelda in the Warriors spinoff space. First came Hyrule Warriors in 2015, and then two years later, Fire Emblem Warriors came out. Then in 2020, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity came out, with a much narrower focus on the world of the best-selling The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. And now here we are with Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, a game with an alternate take on the best-selling (in the franchise) Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Crazy, isn't it?
waltzoid: Gunvolt (Azure Striker Gunvolt) (Default)
I want to share my thoughts about the rest of the Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes demo in a moment, but I just found out that Billy Kametz, the English voice artist for Ferdinand (and also Naofumi from The Rising of the Shield Hero, Josuke from JoJos' Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable, and Galo from Promare, the last of which I haven't seen yet), died this week after being diagnosed with a serious case of colon cancer. I don't know of many other people who could have brought the same energy and earnestness to the Ferdinand role that Billy did. Truthfully, I think the casting and voice acting for Fire Emblem: Three Houses was fantastic all around, and his character was a big part of that. It's awful that this happened just weeks before the release of Three Hopes, which means he won't be around to hear his fans talk about one of his last big performances.

R.I.P. Mr. Kametz. We'll all miss you.

More moderate spoilers for the Three Hopes demo (and some major spoilers for Three Houses) )

Ah, what a week to be a Fire Emblem fan. Not only is it confirmed that the Ashen Wolves will be joining the playable cast of Three Hopes (although we don't know what capacity this will be yet), but the long-awaited and long-teased demo launched along with it. You darn well better believe I downloaded it the moment I got home from work. It's a pretty big one, too - around 7 GB (sorry, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, but something better came up and I needed a sacrifice to the digital gods), and it lets you play through the first four chapters of each faction story and carry over all your progress to the full game two weeks from Friday. Coupled with the bonus save rewards one gets from playing through Three Houses and the 2017 Warriors game, I'm set to have a hefty head start on becoming a one-person wrecking crew.

Moderate spoiler warning for the Three Hopes demo )

The Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes hype train has been running full steam over the last two weeks.

Nintendo has confirmed in a series of weekly videos that everyone from the Blue Lions, Black Eagles, and Golden Deer will be returning as playable characters from Three Houses. All of them seem to be sporting new appearances that land somewhere between their pre-timeskip and post-timeskip looks. As a testament to the dedication of the Fire Emblem fan art community, pictures of the tweener-look Officers Academy students graced Twitter within minutes of each trailer launch. The general consensus seems to be that Annette (Lions), Linhardt and/or Petra (Eagles), and Marianne (Deer) received the best makeovers. Although a lot of people make fun of him, I think Caspar's "rugged forehead scar" and "shonen hero hair" make perfect sense for a guy of his personality. Raphael's pro wrestler headband (almost as if Bass Armstrong was a Dynasty Warriors and/or Fire Emblem character) earns a few coolness points in my book, too.

As for who looks the most fun to play? I'll go with Felix, Dorothea, Bernadetta, Petra, Ignatz (homing paintball arrows for the win), and Marianne (Dorte, I choose you!).

Arrgh! Four more weeks is too far away for me for this game!

After two months of silence following the first Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes reveal at February's Nintendo Direct, a new trailer dropped literally this morning (search Nintendo's YouTube channel for "Mysterious Mercenary") with some gameplay footage and more information on what to expect from the game.
  • Our purple-haired protagonist is named Shez, and according to Nintendo of Japan's Twitter account, they're seeking revenge on Byleth (who apparently never joined the Officers Academy in this continuity) for defeating them during one of their missions. They've also got a Sothis-like entity assisting(?) them, named Arvan*.
  • At the very least, the three lords and their retainers (Edelgard and Hubert, Dimitri and Dedue, and Claude and Hilda) are returning as playable characters. I also noticed Mercedes and Lorenz in some non-combat scenes, so they're probably playable, too.
  • The redhead from the earlier trailer is, in fact, Monica. And what's more...she apparently has a Crest in this continuity? Hmm...
  • Screenshot of Monica's status screen from Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.
My enthusiasm for this game just jumped an unspecified, but healthy-sized, percentage. I wonder if we'll get any more surprises in the next two weeks?

* Arvan isn't named in the English trailer, but there's a chance it might change a bit.

Well, Wednesday's Nintendo Direct certainly was one to watch. A small part of me is surprised that Nintendo led the show with a new Fire Emblem game. Maybe I shouldn't have been, considering how popular Fire Emblem Heroes and Three Houses are right now. Also unexpected: that this new game is an action RPG like Fire Emblem Warriors (which my save file says I've logged over 100 hours in so far after finishing the game and unlocking the true potential of Lucina's weapon), set in what appears to be an alternate universe of Fódlan, kind of like how Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is set in an alternate past of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

So, about that Three Hopes trailer (contains large image) )
