Between the reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 and its new games and the Nintendo Direct in the previous week to prove there's still some life left in the OG Switch, there's a lot to talk about in the world of hobbies and pop culture...more than any single team of writers can handle. Here's what I've been up to this past week:

Unfortunately, I think I caught a cold at work and got a sore throat and the usual stuff that comes with it (headache, coughing, etc.) It's nothing too serious, but it's a pain in the ass when your body doesn't work the way your brain wants it to.

Fortunately, I've willed myself back into writing The Ghost of Ochs chapters regularly, and just released Chapter 45: Supplies in Demand (don't mind the AO3 chapter number; I had three interludes interspersed between them, shifting the numbers). It's part of a Lent ritual I have going for myself where I don't take something "bad" out of my life, but put something "good" in (in this case, it's being creative).

Minor spoilers and errata )

So, after my month-long dive into the vast rabbit hole of Fire Emblem fanfiction, I found about five dozen stories covering games across the whole franchise that a lot of people recommend - well, on blogs and message boards, anyway. Fanfiction.net and AO3 bookmarks are mutable and don't require much engagement, so I based these selections on what people were actively discussing (at or around the time they read them).

Note: These are not my personal recommendations on which Fire Emblem fanfics I consider my favorites, and a story's placement on this list should not be construed as an endorsement. This is a generalized, not-at-all scientific list of stories covering a wide range of topics. Consider it a "fanfic starter pack" for those of you interested in engaging with and/or understanding the Fire Emblem fandom.

If you've read any of the stories on this list, then I encourage you to share your opinion by commenting on and/or sharing this post.

(copied from my Tumblr blog)

Last week, I had the bright idea to go down TV Tropes' Fire Emblem fanfic recommendation list to see how popular they are outside that website. I'm now on my ninth day of that search and the net has been cast, I fear, almost impossibly wide as I pick up recs from other readers (mostly on Reddit, it seems) for fanfics I've never heard of or would have even considered.

The fanfics from the source I've pulled are very Three Houses-heavy (and for good reason; there's a crapton of lore in Three Houses and Three Hopes begging to be expanded upon). Like Santa Claus, as I make my list, I'm checking it twice by searching first through the forum threads and then via Google and DuckDuckGo for the individual fics to make sure that the recs I pick up aren't just one-offs. Maybe I'll stop after this second cycle, as that should give me quite a wide range of websites and sources to draw on, and I would actually like to publish my findings some time before I die. (The Internet is always much larger than you think, even when you think you've seen everything.)

The process is, admittedly, exhausting, but if I can get some more quality stories to read out of it, I'll be happy.

After more than 18 months of writer's and reader's block, The Ghost of Ochs is back in irregular publication.

I've never sat on a project for that long between updates, but I kept thinking about how I would plot out future story arcs. Maybe thinking too far ahead is what slowed me down.

Either way, a new chapter is up, and I guess you could consider this the start of the fourth story arc, with the last one ending after Monica's trip to Abyss (and the interlude with Jeritza and the Flame Emperor).

Chapter 44 is a well-deserved breather chapter after that tense encounter with the Death Knight. The Blue Lions and Golden Deer have been busy, too, but I can't really show you what they've been doing in the interim. The next big mission will come in a few chapters, but this doesn't mean the Black Eagles will be resting on their laurels, either. I have a relatively "minor" (compared to the stuff in Arc 2) tune-up battle in mind that should help get Edelgard and some of the other Eagles more involved. You'll just have to wait and see how that unfolds, though.

Yeah, I know it's a fool's effort for me to keep bashing my head against Savior King trying to make sense of its particular brand of logic. I already read 51 chapters, which covers half the story (more than half if going by raw word count), but the damn thing is (stuck on) 106 chapters long. And since I made the far-too-late decision not to read any more of this crap, my only other viable option is to read TV Tropes spoilers, and, well...if you were as disappointed as I was after reading the academy arc and were holding out hope that the war arc would be more exciting...don't.

(WARNING: Expect a lot of disorganized rambling and ranting from yours truly beyond this point. Also, the usual content warnings regarding Savior King itself apply just as much as they did before.)

Why, yes...it does get worse. MUCH worse. )

And what have I learned from all this? )

I don't know why, but I've always liked the idea of owning my own website, but I just don't have the time (or constant stream of ideas) to keep them updated on a consistent basis. Heck, I only post on this one about twice a month.

I just recently deleted my latest WordPress blog, Scrawl Before You Write, since I haven't posted any new Ghost chapters since I picked up and subsequently put down (in more ways than one) Savior King. As you could probably guess, traffic died off quickly, so I saw no point in keeping it up. Besides, most of my readers are on Fanfiction.net and Archive of Our Own, anyway, so having one less place to have to update every time may do me some good. I only wish DeviantArt had a better interface for updating and organizing works of literature.

As for when the next Ghost chapter will come out, I can't say. But if you want to get caught up on the first three story arcs of Monica's return to the world of the living as I envisioned it before Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes came out, then FF.net, AO3, and DeviantArt are the only places where you can find it now.

P.S. Yes, I'm still grumpy that Monica and Rodrigue don't have dedicated character tags on FanFiction.net (do people still call that place "the Pit of Voles"?), but Kronya and Holst do.

Oh, right. I guess it's Savior King dunking time again, even though [personal profile] sarajayechan  and I said "enough is enough" on it a month before TMG. But since we made it to the halfway point in the game's story, a summary of events since my last blog post is in order.

Spoilers for...oh, who really cares at this point? This fic sucks and I'm tired of talking about it. )
waltzoid: Clemont (Pokémon TCG - alternate art of "Clemont's Quick Wit") (Default)
Me, that's who.

Four months after I said I'd sworn off Savior King, I picked it up again to see just how much stupider it could get from Chapter 31's "Dimitri goes berserk and kills a bunch of villagers from Remire" plot point.

"Very", okay? The answer is "very".

I originally wanted to do a full-on chapter-by-chapter review of this fanfic for das_sporking, but I changed my mind, citing to myself time constraints (I only get a few free hours after work to read, leaving little time to write a detailed critique), so I've taken to Discord to roast this thing with a few friends. Any further SK updates on this blog will only be for chapters that gave me especially big headaches.

Like Chapter 38, for example.

Spoilers for a character death that really isn't )

The next time someone tells you that they've experienced something "so bad it hurts to play/read/watch", ask them if playing/reading/watching that thing made them go to bed in a fitful sleep because their blood pressure ran too high.

That's what happened to me a few days ago when I'd finally checked out of reading The Savior King, the Master Tactician, and the Queen of Liberation.

When Fire Emblem Engage first came out and the English voice actors announced their involvement, I once predicted that if anyone were to replace the late Billy Kametz as Ferdinand should he ever get any alternate units in Fire Emblem Heroes, it would be Ricco Fajardo, the English voice of Pandreo (since he sounds close enough to Kametz's Ferdie already without really trying).

And surprise, surprise: last night's FEH Channel promo video previewed an upcoming tea-themed Tempest Trials summoning event, and Ferdinand, being the tea aficionado he is, is one of the featured units. And who is the person to voice this new tea-time Ferdinand? Why, Ricco Fajardo, of course.

Sometimes I love being right/lucky (like when I guessed Monica would be playable in Three Hopes and was the bearer of the Crest of Macuil Edelgard alluded to in one of her supports with Constance in Three Houses).

waltzoid: Clemont (Pokémon TCG - alternate art of "Clemont's Quick Wit") (Default)
I read some advice from a few Fire Emblem Engage players that it's better to use Master Seals on your units as soon as they hit level 10 in their base class rather than waiting until they reach the level 20 cap, citing that the early power boost will pay dividends in the long run. I'm on my second run on Normal mode, and I tested my first Master Seal on Female Alear after completing Anna's paralogue, and...she only has slightly better stats than Vander, who comes in as a pre-promoted Paladin and one of the first characters you get in the game. Plus, the reduced experience point gain due to the vast level difference (promoted units are counted as base level + 20 for comparison purposes) would lead to them falling behind and having to rely on others until they catch up. Not only that, the units you receive in some of the middle chapters have levels in the 10-20 range. Things might be different on Hard or Maddening, but I wouldn't personally recommend that strategy if you're just starting out.

Well, I beat Fire Emblem Engage this morning...just a few days before the scheduled release of the third bit of Expansion Pass DLC (that adds Veronica from Heroes and the team of Chrom and Robin from Awakening as playable Emblems). I hope those Divine Paralogue chapters aren't too difficult.

Some short final thoughts )Even taking into account the complaints other players had about Engage (the less complex story, the cheesier tone, having to grind a lot for EXP and money), I still liked it and think it's a good enough game on its own. Out of the mainline Fire Emblem games I've played, I'd put it third on my list behind Three Houses and Awakening.

Another winter, another Nintendo Direct to give the once-over and watch Twitter and Reddit melt down over still no new information on Metroid Prime 4.

What's new in the first half of this (fiscal) year? )
waltzoid: Clemont (Pokémon TCG - alternate art of "Clemont's Quick Wit") (Default)
How in the world am I 36 hours into Fire Emblem Engage in only a week? Obviously, that must mean I'm enjoying it (for the most part) if I've managed to get all the way up to Chapter 15, which I think is past the halfway point.

Spoilers ahead. I mean...duh! )
waltzoid: Clemont (Pokémon TCG - alternate art of "Clemont's Quick Wit") (Default)
I started just a day behind the rest of the world, but I still managed to get through a 12-hour blitz of Fire Emblem Engage in just three days and work my way up to Chapter 7.

All jokes about Alear's character design aside (and I think even a few of them are made in the game itself), I don't really mind them (I started out with the male version since the female one arrived first in Heroes). Robin's still my favorite "Avatar"-type character, though. As for the others: Yunaka's in the lead so far, with no clear second-place candidate. I'm still barely out of the first part of the game, so I'm sure I'll find others to fawn over as the game progresses.

I also like that the newer Fire Emblem games are allowing for greater flexibility with combat options - first with Three Houses and Three Hopes' "any character can have almost any job and switch freely between them" system, and this game allowing any character to equip any Emblem ring - so you could stick with the expected option of having cavalry units like Alfred or Vander fuse with Sigurd for double-digit mobility, or go crazy and, say, make armored knight Louis a secondary healer with Micaiah's ring (which allows its wielder to use staves while Engaged when they normally can't).

As someone who's only been playing the series since 2003 with the release of Blazing Blade (oddly only titled "Fire Emblem" here in the U.S.), I still put Three Houses as my personal "gold standard" for the series, but so far, Engage is solidly in the "polished silver" tier alongside Awakening. I did take a bunch of screenshots, but I'll only be able to post the best ones on my recently-revived Tumblr blog (unless there's another hassle-free image host anyone else can recommend).

In case you can't tell by my latest avatar change, I did pre-order Fire Emblem Engage. (Right now, I'm pretending to be Clanne, one of the first characters from the game, mainly because I liked his simple character style compared to Alear's blue-and-red color scheme.) However, since I waited up until a few weeks ago to change my mailing speed from "wait two weeks and get a measly $1 code for something digital from Amazon" to "ship it whenever", my copy won't arrive until a few days after the game comes out tomorrow. This means that I won't be at ground zero for the conversation (read: petty Internet arguments) about the game. And you know what? That's just fine. I don't really care whether or not the story or characters from Engage will supplant those from Three Houses in my brain palace, for that was a unique experience I'm glad the FE team isn't trying to replicate. We could all use something a bit lighter and/or softer (comparatively), anyway.

(Update: Wait a minute...it looks like my copy will arrive today. Huzzah!)

I've had my eye on buying a dedicated gaming computer for a while now, but hadn't seriously thought of actually buying it due to the cost involved (the mid-range all-purpose computers I've bought over the years have ranged somewhere from $500-$800, with the only real upgrades I've added to them were extra RAM sticks when I needed to multitask because they're the easiest things for me to install. On Sunday, my dad drove me out to Micro Center where he got his latest computer (that would theoretically make it easier for him to watch the weekly church service), where I bought myself a PowerSpec G711. I've only had this for a week, so I haven't really had a chance to put it through its paces yet. I'm still trying to get used to the "glowing cooling fans and GPU" aesthetic these gaming PCs have, along with there being no optical disk drive...but I rarely used the one on my old computer anyway.

Aside from the obvious "play better games on my PC", the real reason I chose to upgrade my computer after about 5 1/2 years was for the space it offered. My old rig offered 2 TB for storing games/music/etc., but only 96 GB for programs (and do you believe how weird it is to say 96 GB is too little space?) The G711 only started with 1 TB standard, but I also bought a supplementary 4 TB drive which the clerks installed on-site at no extra cost. Now I won't have to worry as much about shuffling my programs or games around to make room for new ones like I have to do for my PS4 and Xbox One.

Now then, what else have I been doing?

Video Games - While I decide to go with something of a reset for my digital library, I've been playing River City Girls 2 on Nintendo Switch and just recruited Marian (the "damsel in distress" from the original Double Dragon who was a shopkeeper in the first River City Girls game). You have to fight her as a boss first, and it took me six tries to beat her because every time you knock off one of her life bars, she jumps up to hit a switch that floods the room with toxic waste, and you have to jump onto pillars while she tosses exploding oil drums at you. I lost a lot of health because I misjudged how far I needed to jump between pillars. She's also wicked fast and will often dodge out of your combos, which no other enemies up to this point have done yet. Regardless, I can't wait to try her out in real combat. The other new-ish playable character, Provie from River City Ransom: Underground, is still out there somewhere, and I hope to find her soon. ⭐

Manga - I've been on a SPY x FAMILY kick lately, and I just finished reading Volume 5 from my library. While this one wasn't quite as cute as Volume 4 (where Anya first met her new psychic family dog Bond), I did enjoy Chapter 29 and its "Take Your Daughter to Work Day" subplot, with Anya's (failed) attempt to explain to her class what Loid and Yor do for a living. ⭐⭐

Fan Fiction - I don't have much going on in the way of fan fiction (other than slowly working on the latest chapter of The Ghost of Ochs), but one of my friends tipped me off to a silly and cute little Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes one-shot called But I Don't Want to Be a Marketable Plushie, written by the same author who wrote the epic-length Three Houses fic An Eagle Among Lions (which I also like). When I first saw gameplay trailers for Three Hopes and learned that Monica was going to be playable, I was excited, for her dire situation was what inspired me to start writing Ghost. Playing the game and learning that Monica had a thing for Edelgard surprised me at first, but I quickly warmed up to the pairing, and I just wanted to read a story where the emperor and her loyal (and lovestruck) vassal just relax and goof off without the specter of war hanging over them.⭐⭐

There are only six days left until Fire Emblem Engage drops, so I'll soon have something to keep me occupied for a while after playing Three Hopes inside and out for months. I hope this new game resonates with me as much as Three Houses did.
waltzoid: Clemont (Pokémon TCG - alternate art of "Clemont's Quick Wit") (Default)
With Scarlet Blaze and Golden Wildfire all wrapped up, it's time for Azure Gleam to go under the microscope. Why am I doing that route last? There are two reasons:
  1. Edelgard and Claude's goals are more closely aligned in this game than in Three Houses, and openly work together in Part II of both their routes.
  2. Azure Gleam has the most faction-exclusive characters out of the three. Most of the Blue Lions save for Ashe and Mercedes are completely loyal to Dimitri and can't be recruited away from him, while the Church of Seiros characters (Seteth, Flayn, and Catherine) are loyal to Rhea and can't be recruited away from her.
Anyway, spoiler time:
While I make my way through the second half of Azure Gleam (which I hope to get done before the official start of autumn), I'm also going back through the old quests of the other two routes to compile a great big spreadsheet/database of everything that happens in those quests - every ally, every enemy, every strategy...but maybe not every bit of dialogue...this solo project is already a time eater for me. I've been at it for a week and I've chronicled most of Scarlet Blaze Chapter 4, so...I have quite a long way to go if I'm going to finish this thing. This should also make filling out Three Hopes content on the Fire Emblem wiki that much easier.
